Champion: Afnan 9PM Eau de Parfum, 100 ml

Released in 2020, 9PM is the fragrance that turned Afnan from a value label into a household name in the Gulf. It opens on apple and cinnamon over bergamot and lavender, then settles into a thick vanilla and tonka base. Tygar was composed by Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud in 2016 and takes its name and its golden-brown bottle from the tiger's eye gemstone. It is the bestseller of the Le Gemme masculine line: a bright grapefruit opening that collapses into a dense, mineral ambroxan and vetiver core. Where 9PM shouts, Tygar hums.

These are two completely different arguments about what a masculine fragrance should be. 9PM is a gourmand: edible, warm, close to dessert. Tygar is a mineral woody: citrus over stone, dry rather than sweet. The only shared note is patchouli, and it behaves differently in each, sweetened into the vanilla in 9PM and left earthy under the vetiver in Tygar.

Where each one won

Tygar takes the quality vote. An 8.5 on Parfumo is a genuinely high score, and it is well clear of 9PM's 7.9. Voters consistently describe Tygar as smelling expensive, refined and unmistakably luxurious. That is not marketing, that is 957 people agreeing.

9PM takes performance. Parfumo voters rate 9PM at 8.2 for longevity against Tygar's 7.7, and 8.0 for sillage against 7.5. The cheaper bottle lasts longer and travels further. That is unusual, and it is the main reason 9PM has held the crown for two months.

Value is where the round is decided. Here is the arithmetic:

Tygar has to be roughly eleven times better to break even on value, and on the community's own numbers it is not. It rates 0.6 points higher on quality while performing half a point lower on both longevity and sillage.

Afnan 9PM wins Round 23 with a final score of 8.36 against 7.13. That is an eighth consecutive victory, and it breaks the tournament record of seven previously shared by Amouage Interlude Man and Parfums de Marly Layton. 9PM is now the longest-reigning champion in the history of the AlHimyan Perfume Battle.

To be clear about what this result means: Tygar is the better-composed fragrance. If the only question were which one smells more refined, Tygar wins and it is not especially close. But this tournament scores value as a real criterion, because for most people buying a bottle it is a real criterion. At an eleven-fold price difference, the more expensive bottle needs to justify itself, and Tygar's own community scores say it performs slightly worse on the wearer than the bottle costing AED 131.

Which One Should You Buy?

Buy Afnan 9PM if you want a sweet, warm, high-projection evening fragrance that will draw compliments in a Dubai winter and cost you almost nothing to wear daily. It is the safest first bottle we sell in this style, and at AED 131 there is very little to lose.

Buy Bvlgari Le Gemme Tygar if you already own the crowd-pleasers and want something quieter, drier and more distinctive. Tygar is a signature-scent purchase for someone who wants to smell expensive rather than loud. It rewards close range, not a crowded room. The 125 ml bottle is also the better buy of the two sizes at AED 14.18 per millilitre against AED 15.94.
