Perfume Battle Round 28: Afnan 9 PM vs AKRO Night - The Widest Margin in Tournament History

On By AlHimyan / 0 comments

Round 28 of the AlHimyan Perfume Battle puts the longest-reigning champion this tournament has ever produced against a niche French house that almost nobody in the UAE has smelled. Afnan 9 PM arrives with twelve straight wins behind it. AKRO Night arrives with an Olivier Cresp signature, a rose-oud-saffron construction, and a price tag three and a half times higher per millilitre.

What follows is not close. It is, by our arithmetic, the widest margin any round has produced since this tournament started in April.

The Champion: Afnan 9 PM EDP

Afnan 9 PM for Men Eau de Parfum 100ml bottle - sweet oriental apple lavender vanilla fragrance available in UAE

Released in 2015, Afnan 9 PM is the fragrance that proved a house from the Gulf could out-perform designers costing eight times more. Its Parfumo scent score sits at 7.9 from 2,344 ratings - a sample size that puts it in genuinely rare company. Most niche releases never see 300 votes. 9 PM has crossed two thousand and kept its score.

The pyramid is deceptively simple. Apple and Provencal lavender open it, cinnamon and bergamot give the top its lift, lily of the valley and orange blossom carry the middle, and vanilla anchors everything underneath. On paper it reads sweet. On skin it reads like a fragrance that knows exactly how long it intends to stay in the room.

At AED 131 for 100ml, it costs AED 1.31 per millilitre. That is the number that has ended eleven challengers before this one.

The Challenger: AKRO Night EDP

AKRO Night Unisex Eau de Parfum 100ml - Bulgarian rose oud saffron cumin niche fragrance by Olivier Cresp

AKRO is a French niche house built around a single conceit: each fragrance is named for a sensation rather than an image. Night is composed by Olivier Cresp, one of the genuinely major noses of the last thirty years, and the composition is a tight, deliberate rose-oud.

Bulgarian rose sits on top. Cumin and saffron form the heart - a combination that is either magnificent or confrontational depending entirely on your skin chemistry. Oud and musk hold the base. There is no filler here; five notes, each doing structural work.

The Parfumo community has it at 6.0 from 86 ratings. We want to be clear about that number before we use it: 86 votes is a thin sample. It is enough to be indicative and not enough to be conclusive. A fragrance this polarising - cumin is the single most divisive note in perfumery - tends to attract stronger opinions from smaller groups.

How We Scored This Round

Our normal formula weights Fragrantica at 35 percent, Parfumo at 25, longevity at 15, sillage at 10 and value at 15. Fragrantica has been returning a hard 403 to every request path we have for fifteen consecutive rounds now, and we do not estimate numbers we cannot read.

So Fragrantica's 35 percent is removed and the remaining four criteria are renormalised proportionally, exactly as in rounds 23 through 27:

Criterion Weight Afnan 9 PM AKRO Night
Parfumo scent 38.46% 7.9 (2,344) 6.0 (86)
Longevity 23.08% 8.2 (2,260) 7.2 (70)
Sillage 15.38% 8.0 (2,251) 6.6 (71)
Value for money 23.08% 9.1 (2,219) 5.9 (41)
Final score 8.262 6.346

Every figure above was read live from Parfumo on 6 August 2026. Nothing is estimated. AKRO Night also carries a bottle score of 6.6 against 9 PM's 6.9, but bottle design is not part of our formula and never has been.

The Verdict: Afnan 9 PM Wins by 1.916

This is the widest margin in twenty-eight rounds. The previous record was 1.175, set when 9 PM faced Amouage Dia Woman in round 19.

9 PM takes all four scored categories, and it does not take any of them narrowly. Nearly two points on scent. A full point on longevity. Almost a point and a half on sillage. And on value, the gap is 3.2 points - the single largest category gap this round.

The champion now stands at thirteen consecutive wins, extending a record it already owned outright.

The Value Arithmetic

Fragrance Size Price at AlHimyan Per ml
Afnan 9 PM EDP 100ml AED 131 AED 1.31
AKRO Night EDP 100ml AED 472 AED 4.72

Afnan 9 PM is roughly 3.6 times cheaper per millilitre. Worth noting in AKRO's defence: the house itself sells Night at 180 US dollars for 100ml, which is around AED 660. Our AED 472 is materially below the house price. AKRO Night is not overpriced at AlHimyan - it is simply competing against a fragrance whose value score is close to the ceiling.

Which One Should You Actually Buy?

Buy Afnan 9 PM if you want a crowd-pleasing sweet oriental that projects hard for eight hours or more, and you want to spend under AED 150 finding out. It is the safest recommendation in our catalogue for anyone building a first serious fragrance wardrobe.

Buy AKRO Night if you already own the sweet-oriental category and you want something nobody around you is wearing. A cumin-saffron-oud rose is not a compliment magnet - it is a signature. Cresp built it for people who have moved past wanting approval. If you love Bulgarian rose over oud and you are untroubled by cumin, the score in this article will undersell your experience of it considerably.

These two fragrances are not really rivals. One is a value benchmark, the other is a niche statement. Our formula weights value at nearly a quarter of the total, and that is a deliberate choice - most of our customers are buying fragrance to wear daily, not to collect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Afnan 9 PM suitable for the UAE summer?
It is a sweet oriental with vanilla and cinnamon, so it performs best in the evening and in air-conditioned settings. In direct midday heat it becomes heavy quickly. Two sprays maximum before noon.

Does AKRO Night smell like traditional Arabic oud?
Not really. The oud here is a supporting base note under Bulgarian rose and saffron, closer to a French interpretation than a Gulf one. If you grew up around real oud, expect it to read as a rose fragrance with woody depth rather than an oud fragrance.

Why does AKRO Night have so few ratings?
AKRO is a small French house with limited distribution. Eighty-six scent ratings is a thin sample and we have said so plainly rather than presenting it as settled. The score may move meaningfully as more people try it.

Is 9 PM the same as 9 PM Elixir?
No. The Elixir is a separate, more intense Parfum concentration. We stock both - the Elixir is AED 186 for 100ml. This round scored the original EDP.

Do you deliver across the UAE?
Yes, with cash on delivery available, fast nationwide delivery and a 7-day return window on unopened bottles.
