The value tier

• Lattafa — the name that appears most often anywhere. Enormous range, consistently strong performance for the money, and the house most responsible for making Arabian fragrance mainstream outside the Gulf.
• Armaf — best known for well-executed interpretations of designer releases, at a fraction of the price.
• Al Rehab — pocket-sized attars and sprays at very low prices. Repeatedly recommended for anyone wanting to try many things cheaply.
• Khadlaj and Maison Alhambra — same territory, frequently mentioned alongside the above.

The mid tier

• Rasasi — a long-established UAE house with a strong reputation for its own original compositions rather than interpretations.
• Afnan — polished, well-regarded, sits a step above the pure value houses.
• Swiss Arabian — one of the region's oldest houses, known for traditional oud and musk work.
• Ahmed Al Maghribi — repeatedly named as a blind-buy-safe local brand.

The luxury tier

• Amouage — Omani, and the house most often cited when the conversation turns to Arabian perfumery as a serious art form. Priced accordingly.
• Arabian Oud and Abdul Samad Al Qurashi — the big traditional retail names for oud and mukhallat. Both are widely recommended and both attract criticism over pricing in these threads, so read around before a large purchase.
• Ajmal — long-established, broad range spanning mid to high.

Where to start

The advice that recurs for newcomers is to buy small and buy several rather than committing to one expensive bottle. Arabian perfumery leans heavier and sweeter than most Western designer work, and it takes a little time to learn what suits you. Attars and small decants make that cheap to find out.
