Afnan 9PM vs BDK Rouge Smoking Extrait: Round 25 Perfume Battle

في بواسطة AlHimyan / 0 تعليقات

Round 25 of the AlHimyan Perfume Battle puts a 131-dirham crowd favourite against a 931-dirham French extrait. On paper it looks like a mismatch. It is, but not in the direction most people would guess.

Afnan 9PM walks in as champion with nine straight wins, the longest reign this tournament has recorded. Today it faces BDK Parfums Rouge Smoking Extrait, the 2024 cherry-and-oud reinforcement of one of the most talked-about niche launches of the last decade. One of them leaves with a tenth win. The other leaves with a lesson about what community scores actually measure.

The contenders

Afnan 9PM Eau de Parfum 100ml amber gourmand fragrance for men

Afnan 9PM for Men EDP 100ml — AED 131. Released in 2015, 9PM became the reference point for what an affordable amber gourmand could be. Apple and cinnamon over a vanilla-tonka base, built to be worn after dark and noticed from across a majlis.

BDK Parfums Rouge Smoking Extrait de Parfum 100ml cherry oud unisex fragrance

BDK Parfums Rouge Smoking Extrait 100ml — AED 931. Composed by Amelie Bourgeois and Margaux Le Paih-Guerin, released in 2024 as part of BDK's Collection Parisienne. The extrait concentration takes the original Rouge Smoking cherry-liqueur idea and pushes it into saffron, rum and Thai oud.

A note on method: our formula normally weights Fragrantica at 35 per cent. Fragrantica is currently returning 403 to every automated request, so no Fragrantica figure was available for either fragrance today. Rather than guess at one, we dropped that component entirely and renormalised the remaining weights — Parfumo scent 25, longevity 15, sillage 10, value 15 — across both contenders equally. Every number in the table above was read live from Parfumo this morning. Nothing is estimated.

What they actually smell like

Afnan 9PM opens on apple and Provencal lavender with cinnamon threading through, then settles into lily of the valley and orange blossom before the part everyone actually buys it for: vanilla, tonka bean, patchouli and amber. Parfumo's community tags it sweet, fruity, creamy and gourmand — and, tellingly, synthetic. That last tag is the honest one. 9PM does not pretend to be an expensive composition. It is a loud, confident, extremely likeable amber that happens to cost less than a tank of petrol.

Rouge Smoking Extrait is a more ambitious object. Royal Ann cherry, almond, elemi resin, Indian pink pepper, red mandarin and Italian bergamot up top. Tonka bean absolute, labdanum absolute, milk and Peru balsam through the heart. Then ambroxan, saffron, vanilla absolute, amberwood, Indonesian patchouli, Martinique rum, nagarmotha, Siam benzoin and Thai oud in the base. Sweet, spicy, fruity, smoky, creamy. It is a cherry fragrance that refuses to stay a cherry fragrance.

Where the battle was decided

Look at the top two rows again. Both fragrances score exactly 7.9 for scent. A 2015 mass-market amber and a 2024 French extrait, rated identically by their communities. Longevity ties too, at 8.2 each.

So the fight came down to the other three columns. 9PM projects slightly harder — 8.0 against 7.7 on sillage. Rouge Smoking wins the bottle handily, 8.2 to 6.9, and deservedly so; the BDK presentation is genuinely beautiful and the Afnan bottle is the weakest thing about it.

Then value for money: 9.1 against 6.8. That is a 2.3-point gap, and at 15 per cent weighting it is what decided the round. Parfumo's community is not saying Rouge Smoking Extrait is a bad fragrance. It is saying that at its European retail of roughly EUR 260 for 100ml, buyers do not feel the composition justifies the ask — particularly against similar cherry-saffron releases that blend better. Reviewers on Parfumo describe its performance as mild relative to the price and its drydown as linear.

Meanwhile 9PM's 9.1 value score across more than two thousand voters is close to the ceiling of what any fragrance achieves on that metric.

Which one should you buy

Buy Afnan 9PM if you want maximum impact per dirham, you wear fragrance in the evening, and you like sweet amber that people compliment. At AED 131 it is close to unbeatable and there is a reason it has now held this title for ten rounds.

Buy Rouge Smoking Extrait if you want something nobody else at the table is wearing, you specifically like cherry and saffron, and you value a composition with real complexity and a bottle worth leaving out. It is the more interesting fragrance. It is not the better-value one, and our scoring is explicit about weighting value.

Worth noting: our AED 931 is meaningfully below the roughly AED 1,030 that EUR 260 converts to, so the value case at AlHimyan is stronger than the raw Parfumo number suggests. We score the fragrance as the global community rates it, not as we price it — but you should know the difference exists.

Frequently asked questions

Is Rouge Smoking Extrait stronger than the original Rouge Smoking EDP?
It is a different concentration and a different composition, not simply a stronger version. The extrait adds saffron, rum and Thai oud that the EDP does not carry, and it reads smokier and spicier in the drydown.

Is Afnan 9PM suitable for daytime?
It can be, but it is built for evening. The vanilla-tonka-amber base is heavy in heat, and UAE afternoons will amplify it. Most wearers get better results after sunset.

How long does each last?
Both rate 8.2 out of 10 for longevity on Parfumo, which puts them in the same bracket. Expect a full working day from either, with the extrait sitting closer to the skin later on.

Are either of these unisex?
Rouge Smoking Extrait is listed as unisex and wears that way. Afnan 9PM is marketed for men but its gourmand sweetness means plenty of women wear it without it reading masculine.

Result

Afnan 9PM takes round 25 by 8.262 to 7.685 and extends its reign to ten consecutive wins — the longest in the history of this tournament, and now clear of the seven-win mark shared by Amouage Interlude Man and Parfums de Marly Layton.

Both fragrances are in stock at AlHimyan with cash on delivery, fast UAE dispatch and seven-day returns. Shop Afnan 9PM 100ml at AED 131 or BDK Parfums Rouge Smoking Extrait 100ml at AED 931.
