If you read enough UAE perfume threads you will watch the same correction happen over and over: someone says they were sold a fake, and someone else explains they were actually sold a clone. These are not the same thing, and the difference is worth two minutes.

Clone

A clone is a fragrance made by a real, named house that is designed to smell similar to an expensive release. Lattafa, Armaf, Afnan, Khadlaj, Maison Alhambra and Ahmed Al Maghribi all do this. The bottle carries their own brand. Nobody is pretending to be anyone.

This is legal. Scent itself is not protected the way a logo is, so building a similar composition and selling it honestly under your own name is a legitimate business. Some clones are genuinely excellent and outlast the originals they were inspired by.

Fake

A fake is a counterfeit. The bottle carries someone else's brand name, logo and packaging, and it is not from that brand. This is the thing worth avoiding, and not only for authenticity reasons: you have no idea what is in it or how it was stored.

Tester

A third category that trips people up. Testers are real product in plain packaging, meant for shop counters. They are usually cheaper and often perfectly good. They are also frequently non-returnable, so check before buying.

How to tell what you are actually buying

• Read the brand on the listing, not the description. If it says Lattafa, you are buying Lattafa, however much the copy talks about what inspired it.
• "Inspired by", "our impression of" and "alternative to" all mean clone. That is honest labelling, not a red flag.
• A designer name at a fraction of designer price, with no explanation, is the combination worth questioning.
• Batch codes exist on genuine designer bottles and can be checked online.

Which should you buy?

Honestly, either. A well-made clone at AED 60 that lasts eight hours in UAE heat is a better purchase than a designer bottle you resent paying for. Just buy it knowing what it is. The problem was never clones. The problem is not being told.
