Do not let the name mislead you. Despite Amber Oud on the label, this is not a dark, smoky, resin-heavy oud in the traditional sense. The challenger

Amouage Purpose launched in 2023, composed by Quentin Bisch, the perfumer behind some of the most distinctive niche work of the past decade. The House describes it as a vertical totem of mineral woods and stellar sparks of spice. Stripped of the poetry, it is a dry, incense-driven woody spice built on 20 percent oil concentration with four weeks of ageing.

This is a serious, adult composition. It does not try to be pleasant. It tries to be memorable, and it succeeds.

This is where the round gets interesting, because it is a genuine tie. Both fragrances score 8.7 for longevity on Parfumo, from 731 and 413 voters respectively. Both are all-day performers in UAE heat, and both will still be detectable on a shirt the next morning.

Sillage is nearly level too, 8.5 against 8.3. The difference is in character rather than strength. The Al Haramain projects sweet and loud in a way people notice from across a room and usually like. Purpose projects dry and resinous, a smoke and pepper trail that is just as strong but far more selective about who enjoys it.

A practical warning on the Al Haramain: it is potent. Two sprays is a full application. Three is a decision you are making on behalf of everyone in the lift.

Value

Purpose is a beautifully made fragrance and nobody who owns it argues otherwise. But its own community rates it 6.5 out of 10 on value, and that number is not an accident. At AED 1,315 it is asking to be a signature bottle for someone who already knows exactly what they want from incense and dry woods.
