The base is deep and classical, vanilla and benzoin softening Indonesian oud, sandalwood and vetiver.

Its main accords are spicy, woody, leathery, oriental and sweet. Reviewers on Parfumo repeatedly compare it to Tom Ford Tuscan Leather, and Parfumo's own similarity panel lists Tuscan Leather as the closest match. One reviewer describes it as smoky spiced leather that is woodier and spicier than the Tom Ford, even though leather is not a listed note.

The reviews are split in an interesting way. Two contributors rate the scent at 8.5 and 7. Another rates it 3.5 and describes the blend as poorly put together. That spread is normal for saffron and oud compositions, which tend to divide people rather than gently please them.

The data caveat, stated plainly

Safran Rare has 23 scent ratings on Parfumo. The champion has 2,357. Afnan 9 PM takes its twentieth consecutive win. It is worth being precise about what that means, because it is not a claim that 9 PM is the better perfume in some absolute sense. Safran Rare is the more refined, more distinctive composition. It smells more expensive because it is more expensive, and if you want smoky saffron leather there is no version of 9 PM that will give you that.

What 9 PM wins on is the combination our formula measures: near-identical community approval, stronger projection, longer wear, and a price that is a third of the challenger's.
