Round 36 of the AlHimyan Perfume Battle puts a twenty-time champion against one of the quietest, most expensive bottles on our shelves. Afnan 9PM has held the crown for twenty consecutive rounds on the strength of one thing: it outperforms its price by a margin almost nothing else matches. Today it meets Amouroud Santal des Indes, a woody-oriental built around Mysore sandalwood, Turkish rose and Moroccan leather, that costs three times as much and asks you to slow down.

Before the numbers, one piece of honesty about the data. Fragrantica has been unreachable for this comparison, so every figure below comes from Parfumo only. That matters more than usual here, because the two perfumes are not measured on the same footing: 9PM carries 2,358 community ratings, Santal des Indes carries 24. A score built on 24 votes can move a long way on a handful of new opinions. Read the verdict with that in mind.

The tale of the tape

Afnan 9PM: the case for the champion

9PM opens loud and friendly. Apple and bergamot hit first, bright and a little sugary, with cinnamon and Provencal lavender underneath giving the sweetness some spine. It is not a subtle opening and it was never meant to be. Within twenty minutes the fruit settles and lily of the valley and orange blossom carry a soft floral middle that keeps the whole thing from turning into candy.

The base is where 9PM earns its reputation. Vanilla and tonka bean do the heavy lifting, warm and creamy, with patchouli and amber underneath adding a dry, slightly earthy edge that stops the vanilla from going flat. This is the stretch that lasts, and it lasts a long time. Parfumo's community puts longevity at 8.21 out of ten across 2,273 votes, which is a genuinely strong number, and one reviewer on the page reports the scent holding past the fifteen-hour mark with projection staying strong for the first hour.

Sillage sits at 7.99. In practice that means people around you will notice, and in cooler weather they will notice from across a room. For an evening out, a dinner, a long night, this is the profile you want.

Then there is the number that has kept 9PM on the throne for twenty rounds: value for money, 9.13 out of ten. That is one of the highest value scores on Parfumo for any fragrance in any price bracket. At AED 131 for 100ml, the arithmetic is not close.

Amouroud Santal des Indes: the challenger

Santal des Indes is a completely different proposition, and it announces that immediately. It opens on absinthe and frankincense, which is a bitter, resinous, faintly ecclesiastical start. There is no fruit, no sugar, nothing designed to be liked on first contact. It reads as serious.

The heart is the most interesting part of the composition and the most unusual. Turkish rose absolute and narcissus absolute give it a dark floral weight, and then Amouroud does something genuinely strange: curry leaf and Chinese toon. Curry leaf in particular is a note almost nobody uses, and it brings a green, savoury, slightly herbal bitterness that cuts across the rose. It will not be for everyone. It is also the reason people who love this fragrance love it specifically.

The base is the payoff. Mysore sandalwood, Moroccan leather, vetiver and musk, creamy and dry at the same time, with the leather giving it a worn, lived-in quality. This is a proper sandalwood dry-down of the sort that has become rare and expensive, and it is the best thing about the bottle.

Performance is good rather than exceptional: longevity 7.67, sillage 7.50. It stays close and lasts a working day. That is appropriate for what it is. Value for money comes in at 7.27, which is respectable for a niche bottle at AED 394, but it is not competing in the same weight class as 9PM on that metric.

The verdict

Afnan 9PM wins Round 36 with 8.12 against 7.72, and holds the crown for a twenty-first consecutive round.

The scent scores are effectively a tie: 7.87 against 7.88, a difference of one hundredth of a point and well inside the noise, especially given the vote-count gap. On pure smell, the community rates these two the same. Where the margin opens is performance and price. 9PM lasts longer, projects further and costs a third as much, and our scoring weights all three.

What the scoring cannot capture is that these two are not really alternatives to each other. 9PM is a crowd-pleaser and it behaves like one. Santal des Indes is a quiet, bitter, woody thing that rewards someone who already knows what Mysore sandalwood smells like and wants it. A high score for one is not an argument against the other.

Which one should you buy

Buy Afnan 9PM if you want maximum impact for minimum money, you like sweet warm fragrances, you are shopping for evenings and cooler weather, or you are buying a first serious bottle and want something that will get compliments without any risk.

Buy Amouroud Santal des Indes if you already own the crowd-pleasers, you want real sandalwood rather than a synthetic approximation, you are comfortable with bitter and savoury openings, and you want something that almost nobody around you will be wearing.

Frequently asked questions

Is Afnan 9PM suitable for daytime? It works, but it leans sweet and warm, so it is stronger after sunset and in cooler months. In UAE summer daytime heat it can become heavy. Apply less.
